A FireWire DV camera is definitely a better option because of increased frame rates and image quality. The Apple iSight seems to have squashed other manufacturers’ desire to build cheap cameras for the Mac. The Logitech QuickCam Communicate Deluxe is not advertised as UVC-compliant, but apparently it is. Look for a part number 861205 on the camera’s tag. Some (but not all) Quickcam 5000 cameras support UVC. These cameras work on Macs with no additional software installation. Starting in Mac OS X 10.4.9, the Mac OS started supporting UVC-compliant cameras.
However, newer Quickcam models (those advertising Vista support) use a new video protocol called UVC. Without a Mac driver, there is not a way to use most of their cameras in Logger Pro for Mac. Logitech stopped writing drivers for their cameras in Mac OS X 10.2.8. If you have a Logitech QuickCam 5000 made after April of 2007, it is much more likely to work on a Mac. Unfortunately, Logitech changes their model numbers and supported features often, so we can not guarantee that all Logitech cameras will work on Macs. However, in our tests this model does work on Macintosh.
Webcam makers do not often include microphones this good any more (the Webcam 9000 was pretty expensive in its day).According to the documentation provided by Logitech, the Logitech QuickCam Communicate Deluxe does not work with Macintosh computers.
